Our new system is built around the Davis Model of Instruction and is all about teachers setting goals based on their practice. Some schools will be piloting the new system during the 2026-27 school year, and all schools will be on the new system in 2027-28. With the new legislation, SB241, retention becomes a possibility for students who are below benchmark on Acadience Reading beginning with the 2029-2030 EOY benchmark. When we think about students who may be at risk, our minds often go first to those who are still developing accuracy skills—students showing red composite and accuracy scores who need a strong Tier 3 intervention, which they receive through SIPPS.
But what about the students who are holding onto proficiency by their fingertips? The students who have developed accuracy but are struggling to build the fluency they need to maintain and grow their reading success?
In this session, we will open the fluency “picnic basket” and examine what we are packing into intervention time. Through current fluency research, participants will unpack which practices truly help students grow, which familiar approaches may not provide the nourishment students need, and how we can make every minute of fluency intervention count.

Phonological awareness is an important part of the learning to read path, but recent research is helping us think differently about how we teach it. In this session, we'll explore what current evidence says about connecting phonological awareness to letters, decoding, and spelling, and how CKLA provides opportunities to do this throughout the Skills Strand. We'll also consider how integrating phonological awareness within daily literacy instruction may provide a more effective use of instructional time than relying on separate, stand-alone phonological awareness routines.
